Goins and Perrone win 2008 Media Eclipse Awards

New York, NY (Sports Network) – Photographer Matt Goins and writer Vinnie Perrone have been honored with 2008 Media Eclipse Awards. The Eclipse Awards are distributed by The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA), Daily Racing Form and the National Turf Writers Association.

Goins garnered his second photography award for his picture “Frankie’s Flying Dismount” of jockey Frankie Dettori jumping off of Donativum in the winner’s circle after winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf for two-year-olds at Santa Anita Park on October 25. The photograph appeared in the Dubai racing publication Al-Adiyat on November 6.

“I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to work in such an exciting industry, and to be awarded the sport’s highest honor on two occasions is extremely humbling,” said Goins. “I’ve had a front row seat for some of the greatest moments in racing history while being surrounded by the beauty that is the Thoroughbred.”

The 38-year-old Goins won his first Media Eclipse Award in 2006 for a photograph of jockey Julien Leparoux that ran in the Lexington Herald-Leader.

Perrone is the winner of the 2008 Media Eclipse Award for Writing in the Feature/Enterprise category. The Maryland resident was honored for “Recalling Clem Florio’s Matchless Gift for Life” which ran in the Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred magazine in July 2008.

“Matchless Gift for Life” was a memoir of Perrone’s colleague and mentor, the late Clem Florio, longtime Maryland newspaper handicapper and racetrack linemaker.

“The Eclipse Award, for me, is the Holy Grail,” Perrone said about receiving his first Eclipse Award. “The years I covered racing were the most rewarding of my career. It is both gladdening and bewildering to win this award. Capturing Clem Florio is like trying to capture the Grand Canyon with a store- bought Instamatic camera.”

Perrone covered Thoroughbred racing for the Washington Post from 1987-1997.

The 38th Annual Eclipse Awards will be held on Monday, January 26, 2009 at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach in Miami Beach, FL.
